Mr. Tom Bowen developed the manipulative therapy known as The Bowen Technique in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. After serving in World War II, Mr. Bowen became interested in ways of alleviating human suffering. He noticed that when he made certain moves on the body, it had particular effects. Bowen’s patients reported remarkable results from treatments after only two or three sessions. Mr. Bowen developed the technique without any training it the health care field: he claimed that the work was simply a gift from God. He developed the system as it is today. In 1974, Tom Bowen invited Oswald Rentsch and his wife Elaine to study with him for the next two and and a half years. Tom had no notes, charts or manuals at the time. Under his guidance the Rentsch's observed and documented his technique, which was subsequently verified by him as a true representation of the original technique. A 1975 Australian Government inquiry into alternative health practices, motivated by skepticism, served as a major promotion of Tom Bowen's practice by documenting extraordinary successes. The Inquiry also determined that Bowen was personally treating an astonishing 13,000 patients a year with the Bowen Technique. By agreement the Rentsch's did not start to teach the technique until after Mr. Bowen died. The first seminar was in 1986 in Perth, Australia. Four years later the Rentsch's were teaching full time in Australia, New Zealand, North America, the United Kingdom and the European Community. Dedicated to preserving the technique and ensuring it was taught in its original form, the Rentschs founded the Bowen Therapy Academy of Australia in 1987 naming the technique BOWTECH - The Bowen Technique. "I expect to pass through this world but once Any good thing therefore that I can do, Or any kindness I can show to any fellow creature, Let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, For I shall not pass this way again." ~ Thomas Ambrose Bowen ~ 1916 - 1982
